Image Generator
The AI Image Generator creates images from text prompts, reference images, or a combination of both. You can control the style, subject, composition, and visual identity of every generation using built-in references and custom-trained elements.
This guide covers everything you need to generate images — from your first prompt to advanced features like custom Characters, Objects, Styles, and Cinematic Shot.

Generate an image from text
The AI Image Generator creates images from a short description. You only need to:
Open the Image Generator
Type a description of the image you want in the prompt field
Choose a style, aspect ratio, and model
Optionally, add references — a Character, Object, color palette, or more
Click Generate
Your images appear in seconds. From there you can download, edit, publish to your profile, create variations, or turn them into a video.
Tip: Click AI prompt to let the AI help you refine or expand your description. You can also select Auto as your model and let the AI choose the best one for your prompt.
All generated images are saved automatically. Access them anytime from Recent creations on the AI Suite homepage or the History tab inside the Image Generator.
Generate from a reference image
You can upload one or more images as visual input to guide the generation. The tool won't auto-generate a prompt — you write your own.
Click the Upload option in the prompt field
Drag, upload, or select an inspiration image
Click Use image to add it to your project
Write a prompt describing what you want
Adjust style, aspect ratio, model, and other settings
Click Generate
This method is useful when you have a specific look, layout, or theme in mind and want the AI to follow that visual direction.
After generating your image, you can download it, upscale it, make it a video, or turn it into a mockup using other Freepik AI tools.

Auto-describe an image
If you'd rather let the AI write the prompt for you, use the Upload image to describe option.
Click inside the prompt field and select Upload image to describe
Upload your image
Choose a description format: Plain text or JSON
Click Generate
This is helpful when you want to create variations of an existing image or when you're not sure how to describe it.
After generating your image, you can download it, upscale it, make it a video, or turn it into a mockup using other Freepik AI tools.
Prompting tips
Good prompts lead to better results. Here's what works:
Be specific. Instead of "a dog," try "a golden retriever puppy sitting on a red cushion, soft natural light, shallow depth of field."
Include visual details. Mention lighting, camera angle, color palette, mood, or art style when they matter.
Keep it focused. One clear subject per prompt tends to produce stronger results than complex multi-scene descriptions.
Iterate. If the first result isn't right, adjust your prompt rather than starting over. Small changes — adding a detail, swapping an adjective — can shift the output significantly.
Use AI prompt assist. Click AI prompt inside the generator to get suggestions that expand or improve your description.
Explore the Inspiration tab. Browse prompts and images created by other users in the AI Image Generator to discover new styles and ideas.
Use reference features to guide your image
References give you precise control over how your image looks. They work alongside your prompt to guide style, structure, subject, and mood.
To add a reference, open the References section below the prompt and click + Add. You can use presets or upload your own.
Available reference types
| Reference | What it does |
|---|---|
| Style | Applies a specific visual look — artistic, photographic, or branded. Use a preset or upload an example image. |
| Character | Adds a consistent character to your image. Use a saved LoRA character or upload a new one. See Custom Characters. |
| Object | Includes a specific object in the scene. Choose from presets or add your own LoRA object. |
| Color | Controls the color palette. Use a predefined combination or create one manually to match your branding or mood. |
| Camera | Changes framing or angle — portrait, low-angle, tilt-shot, drone view, panoramic, and more. |
| Effects | Adds visual adjustments that influence color, lighting, mood, or action. |
You can combine multiple references in a single generation. For example, apply a Style + Character + Color palette together to produce highly controlled results.
Custom Characters
A custom Character is a LoRA-trained figure — human, creature, or stylized avatar — that the AI can recreate consistently across different scenes, poses, and styles.
What you can do
Once trained, your Character maintains its visual identity in any generation. This is useful for brand mascots, recurring characters in a series, or any figure that needs to look the same every time. You can add up to two people to a single image using Custom Characters.
How to train a Character
Prepare your images
Use high-quality photos with different angles, expressions, lighting, and backgrounds. Include clear visual traits (e.g., pink hair, a scar, a specific outfit) to help the AI lock onto what makes your character unique. Avoid logos, watermarks, or copyrighted content.
Upload your dataset
In the AI Image Generator, click Character → New character. Name your LoRA and upload your images.
Add a token
Assign a unique keyword (e.g., @jane) that you'll use in prompts to call this character.
Start training
Use the default settings unless you need specific adjustments. Training takes approximately 10–30 minutes depending on image size and server load.
Once ready, your Character appears in the Character tab and you can select it for any generation.
Tips for better results
- Keep reference images clean — overly detailed or noisy backgrounds can interfere with accuracy
- If combining a Character with a Style, adjust the intensity of both to balance the results
- Include defining features in your prompts (e.g., "pink hair" or "smiling expression") to reinforce the character traits you want
- If results look off, simplify the image set to focus on key traits and retrain
Custom Objects
Custom Objects work the same way as Characters, but for products and items. Train the AI to recognize and recreate a specific object — a sneaker, a bottle, a laptop — with consistent accuracy across different scenes and lighting.
How to train an Object
Prepare your images
Upload 10–15 clear photos of your object. Show different angles, use good lighting, and keep backgrounds simple. Avoid including logos or unwanted elements in every photo.
Upload your dataset
In the AI Image Generator, click Object → New object (or go to the Objects tab). Name your Object and upload.
Train
Training begins automatically and usually takes a few minutes.
How to use a trained Object
Open the AI Image Generator and go to the Objects tab
Select your trained Object and click Use Object
Write a prompt describing the scene
Include details like setting, lighting, or camera angle (e.g., "A smartwatch on a wooden desk, soft lighting, front angle").
Click Generate
Use cases
Custom Objects are especially useful for product photography, e-commerce visuals, and marketing campaigns where you need your real product shown in AI-generated scenes.
Tips
- Be clear and specific in your prompts. Adding details like color or texture (e.g., "black leather bag") helps the AI maintain consistency.
- Keep prompts simple — avoid long, complex sentences.
- Try a few variations to get the best result.
Custom Styles
The Style feature lets you define and reuse a visual identity across multiple generations. You can apply preset styles or create your own using LoRA training.
Using preset styles
In the AI Image Generator, click Style in the left sidebar
Click any preset to activate it
Write your prompt, choose a model, and click Generate
We offer dozens of preset styles covering photographic, artistic, editorial, and cinematic looks. Browse the Style panel in the Image Generator to explore the latest options.
Creating a custom Style
Click Style → New Style
Add a name that captures the essence of your style, and write a short description focusing on mood, color, and texture
Description of step 2
Upload a cover image that visually represents your style
Define the style by prompt (text-based description) or by uploading images (10–50 reference images recommended)
For image-based styles, use varied images that are at least 2,000px wide or tall.
Optionally, check Publish your style to make it available to the community
Click Create your style
Tip: Uploading more images enhances the richness and flexibility of the style, while fewer images focus on specific details. Keep your set visually consistent but varied in scene, color, and composition.
Style tips
- Style results vary by model. Experiment with different models to find the best match for your visual goals.
- When upscaling styled images, try lowering Creativity and raising Resemblance to preserve subtle style elements.
- You can use styles created by other users from the community gallery.
Cinematic Shot
Cinematic Shot generates studio-grade images with strong photorealism and cinematic composition — designed to look as if they came straight from a professional photo shoot or film set.
You'll find Cinematic Shot inside the Image Generator as one of the available models. It uses a dedicated model optimized for photorealistic output with cinematic framing, lighting, and depth.
To use it:
Open the Image Generator
Select Cinematic Shot from the available tools or models
Write a prompt describing the scene, subject, and mood
Description of step 3
Adjust aspect ratio and other settings as needed
Click Generate
Cinematic Shot works well for editorial imagery, product campaigns, storytelling scenes, and any visual that needs a polished, professional look.
